In Which the Ringmaster Returns to Cinematographic Life

I picked up a camera yesterday and charged the batteries.  I'm broke, I'm bored, and I need to be creative.

I called my neighbor the actor and told him that I would do any project that he wanted as long as it was short.  I need to find some inspiration.

Work is all-consuming right now.  Every moment is spent making plans to build a DE classroom that is a step beyond the current design philosophies.  I also have to juggle maintenance, planning the summer maintenance, and trying to deal with all the changes the new department is going through.

I'll be back to regular blogging soon.  The semester is wrapping up, so it's a busy time.

In Which the Ringmaster Fills Space

It's time to order equpment at Distance Ed./Elearning.  I have been juggling research, conferences, and maintenence all week.  Every day has been filled with non-stop work all day.  In the midst of all this, I am trying to get caught up on the latest technologies so I can work on innovating and combining them in new ways to enhance our classes.

I've been trying to Twitter twitter.com/shannondbrown regularly what I'm working on for my own reference as well as proof to the higher ups that I'm busting my behind all day.  Interestingly enough, I'm meeting some interesting locals!  it's a new way of communicating that I find interesting.  It's a place to put all my brain farts and quick philosophical musings.  i keep digging, looking for the next big thing, the next advance.  I'd put money on MOSOSO's becoming more common, but I can't see what practical use it would be yet.

I'm getting prepped to do a podcast on the new ETSU iTunes University as the ETSU Tech Guy.  More about that when it's finalized.

In Which the Ringmaster Critiques Terrestrial Radio

I worked in  radio for a time.  I managed a student radio station in college.  I have friends that are still in radio.

Let's face it, terrestrial radio is on the downhill slide.  It's being replaced with mobile mp3 players, satellite radio, and internet radio.

There are many reasons that I'd rather listen to a Shoutcast internet radio station than local radio, but I consider two primary reasons as important to radio's decline.

New Look on the Way!

I never have time.

Because at work,  I'm constantly interrupted to do maintenence, I am always playing catch-up.  Work also has a habit of eating up my personal time and my family takes up most of what's left.  I feel like I'm not getting anything done.  I need more organization.

That's why, when I work on these websites and posts, it usually takes me a while to find time to sit down and tweak them out.  It's not hard to write a blog, but getting the blog's look and features can take hours of work.  This site represents me on the Big Interweb.  I've always considered myself a writer because it's a compulsion.  With the advent of internet blogging, i've finally got an outlet, but I've been letting my work get in the way of my life.  That said, I'm changing things.

This blog has looked very simple for a long time.  I want a more interesting look for it as well as some new gadgets.  I also need to start posting more of my writings.

Less World of Warcraft, more write.  Eschewing distractions, I have a plan.

All that is to say that I've given the blog a new look and I'm going to add some cool stuff to it just for my own entertainment.  I doubt that anyone will read it anyways. Despite reality, I'll continue to write articles here.

I'll also be writing about modern technology at my tech blog, Ten Million Years to Earth and about my creative projects at Techno Bohemia.  I want to be able to focus and write articles that folks might want to read reliably.

I've got to write, so I may as well organize it.

Thanks for reading!

In Which the Ringmaster Experiences Blogfusion

I have four blogs and a twitter.  Something's got to go.

I haven't posted here in a while because I've been blogging to TechBo and Myspace.  I must post to my work blog at least once a week and, since I got the TechBo blog site working again, I've posted one or two there.

I am suffering from lack of focus.  I'm going to make some changes...

I'm going to stop posting new Myspace blogs.  Myspace is probably the most read blog I have, but it's also one of the most inane constructs attributed to mankind.  My Myspace profile is dedicated to horror, so I have no business posting personal stuff there.  If I do post a rare original blog, it will be on topic, about horror.  What I WILL do is repost ALL of my other blogs here.

"Other blogs?  Ringmaster, didn't you just say you had too many and needed to cut back?"

There's cutting back, and then there's focusing.

My "old" blog at TechBo Blogs will get an overhaul.  Instead of a personal blog, the function of THIS site, I'm going to dedicate to maybe expounding on entertainment and tv reviews.

This blog needs a facelift.  Although I was in a "basic white" mood when I created it, I now need something with some color and pizazz!

My work blog will remain unchanged and boring and WILL NOT be included on the Myspace collection..

Techno Bohemia will remain the same.  I'll write about local happenings, cool stuff, post lame videos.  TechBo is the flagship.

I'm getting into twitter, but only one person I really know uses it.  I don't know why I bother.

In Which the Ringmaster Appreciates Someone More Clever than Himself

I haven't been able to run Itunes on my Vista machine in months.  It corrupted and wouldn't allow me to remove OR reinstall it.  Today I sat down to solve the problem and lucked onto a forum where a lovely little techie solved it for me!

This fixes the following problem in the installation of quicktime:

"itunes could not be installed because visual basic script (VBScript) is not installed or has been disabled."

I also had to finish off the cleanup with Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

In Which the Ringmaster Prognosticates

Technology.  That's my latest subject and this is my final article on it.

"Ringmaster, how is current technology affecting people?  Everything seems the same to me!"

A good question, William.

Look around you next time you walk across a college campus or through the mall.  Of all the people you see, how many are wearing headphones or talking on a cell phone, or both?  I'm thinking that you see at least a couple.  These folks are insulated, nothing outside can touch them.

For the first time probably in history, we've been given the ability to totally control our personal interaction with people.  Even on a crowded bus, with our technology we can smile, blissfully unconcerned with the carcophony around us as we listen to music, podcasts, or to totally shut out the chaos, watch video.  It's possible to enter a crowded, noisy bar and perch on it without ever interacting with anyone other than th bartender.  Walking to our cars, we can fill the quiet with chatter on a cell phone.  If the movie is slow, we can text-chat with people.  In fact, even if we ARE interacting with others, we can carry on separate conversations through text with other people who are likewise engaged!

We have been given the opportunity to live in a world where we only interact with people that agree with us.  How did this happen?

In Which the Ringmaster Returns, Guns Blazing!

This will be my next Myspace blog...I can't wait a day to get it out of my head.

Let's talk some more about technology!  Specifically how technology is changing the way people interact.  Consider this article a warning of things to come.

My generation was lucky.  VERY lucky, but I don't think we realized it.  Born between 1967, or so, and 1973, we were the kids of the hippies and baby boomers.  We were the generation AFTER the awakening.  Our parents had tasted freedom and realized that they had made some terrible mistakes.  By God, their kids would NEVER do what they did!

Generally, we grew up in the 70s in a safe world.  Yea, we could be nuked at any moment, but our parents had lived with that possibility for a decade, so it was just the way it was.  There were corner stores, full service gas pumps, local department stores, and a general tolerance for people.  Driving drunk was often punishable by a ticket and drugs were not for polite society.

Technology was a tv or transistor radio.  THEN the Atari 2600 came along and changed EVERYTHING.  It was the Ipod of it's day.  Expensive, but irresistable, my family would gather around the Atari 2600 like primitive families must've huddled around a fire.  This was the mainstream beginning of the day to day gadget that would infiltrate our lives.

Hand held electronic games were next!  You and friends could play for hours whenever you were away from your Atari 2600!  Then computers! (My first was a TI-99/4A.)

After this, we had a unique perspective on computing technology.  We grew up together!  Dad sold computers at Sears in the early 80s, so I would go out there for hours and hours tinkering, programming, and generall playing with all the brands.  I thought they were good for games, but otherwise boring. (I stand behind this statement, even today.)
